Introduction

The scenic and beautiful state of Uttarakhand formerly known as Uttaranchal was carved out of the state of Uttar Pradesh in 2000 and became the 27th state in the country of India. Referred to as the Land of the Gods, the state gets this name because of the thousands of historical Hindu temples and its location near the Himalayas considered to be of religious significance by the Hindus. Uttarakhand is also a major tourist destination and the concept of religious tourism has grown here in recent times. Dehradun is the provisional capital of the state and is a beautiful city in itself. The other prominent city in the state is the city of Nainital.

The Population of Uttarakhand according to the 2011 census stands at about 10 million, making it the 20th most populated state in India. The state experiences beautiful climate throughout the year and the location close to the Himalayas has prompted an increase in the population in recent times. The state is spread over an area of about 53000 sq. km. and thus it is one of the smaller states in the country. The density of population per sq. Km. is about 189 and fairly below the national average. The state has a growth rate of about 19% which slightly exceeds the national growth rate of about 17%. The population of the state is rising considerably due to rapid efforts towards development and progress. The literacy rate in the state is about 80% a figure that has improved tremendously in the last few years due to the consistent efforts of the government. The sex ratio in Uttarakhand exceeds the national average by 20 points. The statistics in the Uttarakhand Census 2011 reveal facts that can be instrumental in planning for a better development plan for the state.

The capital city which is also the largest city in the state of Uttarakhand is Dehradun. The languages spoken in the Uttarakhand state includes Hindi and Sanskrit.
